The 2007 Commonwealth Cup Regatta was run on Saturday, September 22nd and was by all accounts the finest sailing event on the lake this year.
By: John Pinney and Mark Sunderman

The second running of the Commonwealth Cup Regatta was held Saturday, September 22nd. The event started off with a well attended cookout and registration at the beach. There was no "official" headcount, but everyone felt there was well over one hundred sailors and power boaters to kick off the weekend. Twenty four boats registered for the race which was 25 % increase from last year. There were enough boats to race three classes, JAM A and B (jib and main only) and a Spinnaker fleet. The racers met at CYC for the skippers meeting on Saturday morning and the course was set to run to Star Lime Works and back, about a 12 mile course.

The race started at 10:00 in a fresh 7 to 9 mile breeze. The fleets did well sailing to the first mark and were looking forward to a quick ride back. The wind died to nearly nothing as most of the boats rounded the mark. So everyone floated and made the best of the day. The down wind run turned into a 3 to 4 hr drift. A few boats dropped out but enough boats finished in the time restriction to award 3 trophies in each class.

A tired bunch of sailors met back at the beach around 6 pm for libations and sail talk. We were treated to a presentation by John Kretschmer an author and around-the-world sailor. The trophy presentation followed the speaker and we headed for the club for energy. Everyone enjoyed great food and service followed by music and dancing.

There are too many people to thank for the many hours of hard work that went into this event, so for now we would like to thank all of the members of the Commonwealth Yacht Club and Kentucky Lake Sailing Club and Green Turtle Bay for their generous support.
