Commonwealth Cup Regatta 2007

By: John Pinney and Mark Sunderman

The second running of the Commonwealth Cup Regatta was held Saturday, September 22nd. The event started off with a well attended cookout and registration at the beach. There was no "official" headcount, but everyone felt there was well over one hundred sailors and power boater to kick off the weekend. Twenty four boats registered for the race which was 25 % increase from last year. There were enough boats to race three classes, JAM A and B (jib and main only) and a Spinnaker fleet. The racers met at CYC for the skippers meeting on Saturday morning and the course was set to run to Star Lime Works and back, about a 12 mile course.

The race started at 10:00 in a fresh 7 to 9 mile breeze. The fleets did well sailing to the first mark and were looking forward to a quick ride back. The wind died to nearly nothing as most of the boats rounded the mark. So everyone floated and made the best of the day. The down wind run turned into a 3 to 4 hr drift. A few boats dropped out but enough boats finished in the time restriction to award 3 trophies in each class.

A tired bunch of sailors met back at the beach around 6 pm for libations and sail talk. We were treated to a presentation by John Kretschmer an author and around-the-world sailor. The trophy presentation followed the speaker and we headed for the club for energy. Everyone enjoyed great food and service followed by music and dancing.

There are too many people to thank for the many hours of hard work that went into this event, so for nowwe would like to thank all of the members of the Commonwealth Yacht Club and Kentucky Lake Sailing Club and Green Turtle Bay for their generous support.

Kentucky Dam Marina Wins Commonwealth Cup Challenge on Kentucky Lake

9 -22-07 Gilbertsville KY.     Sails were flying on  Kentucky Lake this Saturday as the Annual Commonwealth Cup Regatta pitted seven marinas and sail clubs in a competition to determine – “who has the best sailors”.  Kentucky Dam Marina defeated the defending champions from Lighthouse Landing and was awarded the Commonwealth Challenge Cup.  Light House Landing was the overwhelming favorite to win perhaps all three divisions but a strong performance by James Wells of Gilbertsville and his father on their J28 Shamrock dominated the large JAM B class and led Kentucky Dam Marina to a dramatic come from behind one point victory.  Wells scored 6 points and teammates Wayne Cassady of Louisville and Ken Bald of Freeburg Illinois completed the scoring for KDM.  Captains Rod Flint and Steve Smith also contributed to the winning team.  Kentucky Dam Marina will hold the Challenge Cup and defend it the following year.

Local Colin Green from Hardin, KY did well, finishing second to Wells in the B fleet, on his Morgan 30 “Cygnet” for Town and Country.   Winner of the Spinnaker Fleet was Ed Beeny of Dawson Springs on the J24 “Windstalker”. The JAM A winner was Lee Bird of Kuttawa on his Hunter 35.5 “Neptune” - both from Defending Champion Lighthouse Landing.  Beeny also won line honors as the fastest boat and individual champion.  Adventurer, circumnavigating sailor and author of “At the Mercy of the Sea” John Kretschmer spoke at the awards ceremony and held a book signing.

The final score was:

Kentucky Dam Marina 11

Lighthouse Landing 10

Green Turtle Bay 8

Town and Country 5

Rottgering Marine 3

CYC Represented in Malta at the Rolex Middle Sea Race

Man are we the luckiest guys in the world or what! Kim and I traveled to Malta to observe how the Royal Malta Yacht Club organizes and runs their most prestigious regatta, the Rolex Middle Sea Race.  The race starts Saturday the 27th.  It is a fixed distance race with a 7 day time limit.  Here we have found great boats, great people and a great time.

Last night, at the pre-race party, one of Kim’s friends from his stay here two years ago mentioned they are two crew members short as two of their crew is stuck in Sardinia and can’t make it here in time for the race.  I suppose this is one of those cases where we were in the right place at the right time, so Kim and I leave on Saturday, 11:00 am Malta time on the S Y Escape on a 607 mile race in a 47.7 Beneteau.

You can track our progress on their web site, www.rolexmiddlesearace.com.  Each boat is equipped with a GPS transponder giving our location in real time.  Watch and route for the home team as it were.  We will be attending the Prize Giving Ceremony the following Saturday evening and hopefully we will have something to talk about when we arrive home.

Needless to say, we will not be back in time for the Halloween Party or the meeting scheduled for next weekend.  Please allow us a little time to re-schedule these meeting and we will notify those involved as soon as we can.

You can visit the Royal Malta Yacht Club web site with this link.

Wish us luck,

Butch Jones, Rear Commodore, CYC

 Kim Ketter, Commodore, CYC
